Summer is just around the corner and everyone is excited! I am sure that you are excited about extra family time, swimming, fun activities, and trips. It is a wonderful time for lots of things, but don’t forget to have your child/children to spend time learning. It is important to continue their learning during the summer as research shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same test at the beginning of summer vacation if they have not been engaged in some type of educational program. The summer learning loss is even more pronounced in spelling and math facts than other tested areas. In fact, an average student loses approximately 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills alone over the summer months. That is quite a significant loss that most students can’t afford.
Since it is clear that students lose skills over the summer, many schools offer summer sessions. Take the challenge and keep your children learning. Take time to find library programs and play board games that promote higher-level thinking. Also, don’t forget that summer programs at Bridge Builder Academy are an effective intervention for purposes of academic remediation, enrichment, or acceleration. Here at Bridge Builder Academy we are excited about some great summer opportunities including Spanish for beginners, SAT preparation classes, creative writing, intensive reading programs, and hands on math sessions just to list a few.
